Eastern Shore city websites Spanish Fort: The smallest of the municipalities flanking the eastern side of Mobile Bay, Spanish Fort encompasses the Causeway to Mobile and areas north of I-10. Steeped in history both in the Revolutionary and Civil wars, it's home to some of the largest commercial development with the Eastern Shore Centre and the proposed Bass Pro Shop mall. Daphne: Hanging moss, live oaks and piers jutting over Mobile Bay are typical of this beautiful area whose first inhabitants were probably Native American tribes and early explorers. Now, Daphne is a powerhouse of a town with parks and sports fields, thriving commercial development and robust home building. Fairhope: Founded in 1894 as a utopian single tax colony, Fairhope maintains its independent streak to this day. Depending upon who you ask, some will say Fairhope is an artist and writers' colony; and others will look to its farmland roots. To this day, Fairhope is a mix that draws others to its quaint downtown and hometown feel.

Grab your flip-flops and prepare to live the vacation life 365 days a year ... if they'll let you off work that long.
The Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay, a bedroom community of Mobile, Ala., and long-time summer getaway is oriented around water in almost every aspect of life.
Its rainfall continually sets records. Not in the sense that it deprives you of sunshine, but it comes in welcomed hour-long torrents to break the summer heat. Locals call them "frog stranglers."
Mobile Bay -- and Orange Beach and Gulf Shores less than an hour away -- serve as the playground for all. Fish in Mobile Bay off the Fairhope or Daphne piers or find a secluded spot on the Causeway that stretches across the Bay. (They sell the permits for just a few dollars at Wal-Mart!). Or choose your own form of transportation to get on the water: boat, personal watercraft, kayak rental, boogie board or old innertube.
Seafood is in abundance. A number of fine restaurants serve it up the old South way - fried - or give it a New South, cosmopolitan twist. During Jubilees, periods of hot dry weather, oxygen starved shrimp and flounder, eels and croakers literally flop onshore and into your bucket or net for the taking.
Summertime brings the swimming pool crowd out. Days spent at the YMCA pool, any of Lake Forest's three pools (a great place to meet like-minded folks) or just a neighbors backyard pool are leisurely.
Evidence of the part water plays in the life of Eastern Shore residents can be seen in their garages and backyards: a stack of coolers for every ocassion great and small, boogie boards, swimsuits, towels, dive toys and Sea-Doos, Stauter boats and luxury vessels.
Of course, that's not all you'll find on the Eastern Shore. To name just a few of the various amenities: Excellent golf courses, children's recreation leagues offering soccer, basketball and baseball; a large YMCA facility for everything from yoga to weight lifting to spin classes; arts and crafts festivals; a limited number of health food stores; nature areas; plant nurseries; shopping; oh, and, of course, Mardi Gras.
But it's the people who make life comfortable and homey. If you live here long enough, you'll be on a first name basis with many of the people you do business with. Granted, their pace may be a little slower than what you're used to, but, hey, with days so long who's in a hurry?
